SEA ISLAND, Ga., Oct. 8 (UPI) -- David Toms, without a PGA Tour victory in almost five full seasons, grabbed a one-shot lead Friday midway through the McGladrey Classic.
Toms shot a 4-under 66 at the Sea Island Resort Seaside Course for a 36-hole total of 10-under 130.
Joe Durant birdied four of his first 11 holes and also shot a 66, to finish alone in second at 131, while Heath Slocum and Rich Barcelo shared third at 132. Brian Gay and Mathias Gronberg were another shot back.
Toms, 43, has 12 tour victories including the 2001 PGA Championship. He showed signs of coming out of his slump this season when he finished second at the Wyndham Championship in August.
"I'm starting to play better," Toms said. "Golf goes in cycles and I'm hoping what I'm doing right now towards the end of the year, even though we're almost done, will carry me over into next year and I can get going early."
John Rollins, who led after the opening round, shot a 71 and was four shots behind Toms.
