John Rollins leads on PGA Tour

SEA ISLAND, Ga., Oct. 7 (UPI) -- John Rollins ran off four straight birdies on the back nine Thursday and his 7-under 63 gave him a one-shot lead after one round of the McGladrey Classic.

Rollins began his birdie run at the 14th hole of the Sea Island Resort Seaside Course, allowing him to edge David Toms and Troy Merritt for the top spot. Toms shared the lead with Rollins until missing a 6-foot par putt at his final hole, leaving him tied with Merritt at 64.

Joe Durant, Michael Letzig and Rich Barcelo shared fourth place at 65.

This is the second tournament of the PGA Tour's Fall Series, during which players low on the money list will be trying to secure a top finish to ensure their spot on next year's circuit.

Rollins is not concerned about that since he is 41st in earnings this year. The top 125 on the money list retain their exemptions to play on the tour.

"Obviously I'm safe," Rollins said. "But I don't really feel like I've played as consistent and steady as I would like."

Two U.S. Ryder Cup team members and a vice-captain are in the field this week despite arriving from Wales late Tuesday.

Matt Kuchar shot a 3-under 67, Zach Johnson had a 70 and assistant captain Davis Love III, a resident of Sea Island, also had a 70.
