WASHINGTON, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Pinch-hitter Nick Evans broke a tie with a seventh-inning RBI double Wednesday that lifted the New York Mets to a 3-2 victory over the Washington Nationals.
Evans delivered a double to right field that scored Josh Thole, giving R.A. Dickey (10-6) the victory. Livan Hernandez (9-11) allowed six hits and all of the Mets' runs over 6 1/3 innings in taking the loss.
Dickey, the first of five pitchers used by New York in the game, gave up two runs and five hits in going six innings. Hisanori Takahashi pitched the ninth and collected his fifth save.
Thole led off the New York seventh with a walk and took second on a sacrifice. Lucas Duda was sent into hit for Dickey, but when Washington changed pitchers, Mets Manager Jerry Manuel countered with Evans. Evan battled reliever Sean Burnett for eight pitches, fouling off three in a row before connecting for the run-scoring double.
New York took a 2-0 lead in the third inning with Luis Hernandez and Carlos Beltran getting RBI. The Nationals came back in the fifth with a two-run home run by Wilson Ramos. It was his first major league home run.
