Nadal also held the U.S. Open top seed in 2008 but lost to Scotland's Andy Murray in the semifinals.

Last year's runner-up and five-time champ Roger Federer drew the No. 2 seed this year.

Serbia's Novak Djokovic got the nod for the third seed, Murray garnered the four seed and Robin Soderling of Sweden is fifth.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Nikolay Davydenko, Tomas Berdych, Fernando Verdasco, Andy Roddick and David Ferrer.

Last year's champ, Juan Martin del Potro, withdrew due to a right wrist injury that required surgery in May.
