Langer notches second straight major

SEATTLE, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Bernhard Langer won his second straight major seniors event Sunday, shooting a 3-under-par 67 to claim the championship of the U.S. Senior Open.

Langer, coming off a victory at last week's Senior British Open, finished with an 8-under 272, two strokes better than third round co-leader and Seattle hometown favorite Fred Couples.

Langer became the first player since Tom Watson in 2003 to win back-to back majors on the Champions Tour. The accomplishment was all the more impressive because they were Langer's first two major wins on the tour.

Couples was waylaid by a triple-bogey at the second hole when he knocked his approach shot into the water. He ended Sunday with a 1-under 70, taking second place behind Langer at 5-under 275.

Knotted for third place were Olin Browne (65) and John Cook (67) at 2-under 278.

Watson (66) claimed sole possession of fifth place at 1-over.
