ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., May 30 (UPI) -- Jason Nix clouted a tie-breaking grand-slam homer in the sixth inning Sunday, boosting the Chicago White Sox to an 8-5 decision over Tampa Bay.
With the score tied 3-3 entering the frame, James Shields (5-3) walked Paul Konerko, allowed a single to Mark Kotsay and hit Carlos Quentin with a pitch, loading the bases.
Nix then blasted a shot to deep left on a 3-2 fastball, notching his first career slam and handing the White Sox a win in the rubber game of a three-contest set at Tropicana Field.
Alex Rios added a two-run homer, going 3-for-5, while Konerko and Mark Teahen contributed two base hits apiece for the winners.
Jake Peavy (4-4) notched the victory despite allowing five runs on 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings. Sergio Santos, Mark Thornton and Tony Pena combined for three innings of scoreless relief.
Ben Zobrist hit a solo homer and went 2-for-4 with two RBI in Tampa Bay's loss.
