The win was the seventh in 10 games for the Rays. Seattle has lost four straight and eight of their last 10 contests.

Jason Vargas (2-2) took the loss after giving up three runs on four hits and fanning eight in 6 2/3 innings.

Tampa Bay got off to a 3-0 lead through five innings as Shields returned the first 17 Seattle hitters.

The Mariners scored a run in the sixth and another in the bottom of the ninth, but Rafael Soriano shut the door and chalked up his seventh save.
