NHL: Atlanta 5, Carolina 3

RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 17 (UPI) -- The Atlanta Thrashers ended their eight-game losing streak Saturday with a 5-3 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Ilya Kovalchuk scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period of the Thrashers' first road win in more than a month.

Zach Bogosian, Jim Slater, Rich Peverley and Nik Antropov each had a goal and an assist. Ondrej Pavelec stopped 29 shots in goal.

Jussi Jokinen had two goals and an assist for Carolina. Cam Ward made 32 saves and Ray Whitney added a goal. Joni Pitkanen assisted on all three goals.

Atlanta led 3-1 at the start of the third period, but the Hurricanes came back to tie the game on a power-play goal by Jokinen at 7:59 and a score by Whitney at 9:05.

Kovalchuk scored 44 seconds later on a wrist shot from the left circle that gave Atlanta a 4-3 edge. Antropov scored on the empty net with 24 seconds remaining in regulation.
