Federer, No. 1 in the world, helped Switzerland defeat Italy in a playoff to keep the Swiss in the World Group draw. Nadal, ranked No. 2, often plays for Spain but missed the 2009 Davis Cup semifinals because of injury. Neither has committed to playing the best-of-five series next March.

Other 2010 first-round pairings have the United States traveling to Serbia, the Czech Republic playing at Belgium, Sweden playing host to Argentina, Germany going to France; India headed to Russia, Croatia welcoming Ecuador, and Chile playing in Israel.

Spain, which won its third Davis Cup last year, goes for a fourth title in December against the Czech Republic.

The United States has won the most Davis Cup tournaments, collecting its 32nd title in 2007.
