PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Philadelphia Eagles Coach Andy Reid says the health of injured quarterback Donovan McNabb is improving, but his status for Sunday's game is unknown.

McNabb has not practiced this week after suffering a cracked rib in Philadelphia's season-opening 38-10 rout of the Carolina Panthers.

"He is making progress," Reid said. "We'll just see how he does over the next couple of days."

The Eagles play their 2009 home opener against the New Orleans Saints Sunday, and if McNabb's cracked rib prevents him from playing, he will be replaced by backup quarterback Kevin Kolb.

Philadelphia signed journeyman signal-caller Jeff Garcia earlier this week to be their No. 3 quarterback.

Against the Panthers, Kolb completed 7-of-11 passes for just 23 yards, was sacked twice and lost a fumble.

"I'm sure with Kevin in there, (the Saints are) going to try and come after him a little bit," running back Brian Westbrook told the Philadelphia Daily News.
