Federer, Murray lead Indian Wells winners

INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 15 (UPI) -- Switzerland's Roger Federer and Scotland's Andy Murray were among Saturday's winners at the Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif.

Federer, the tournament's second seed, downed France's Marc Gicquel 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 and Murray, the No. 4 seed, was a 7-5, 6-3 winner over Spain's Albert Montanes.

Among other winners Saturday were No. 8 seed Gilles Simon of France; No. 10 Fernando Verdasco of Spain; and No. 11 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France.

Top-seeded Rafael Nadal of Spain, the reigning champion at both the French Open and Wimbledon, will be in action Sunday along with No. 3 Novak Djokovic of Serbia and seventh-seeded Andy Roddick of the United States, the world's seventh-ranked men's player.

The eventual 2009 Indian Wells champion will claim a winner's check of $605,500.
