NHL: San Jose 4, Detroit 2

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Patrick Marleau ignited a three-goal outburst in a span of 3:25 of the second period Thursday that carried the San Jose Sharks past Detroit 4-2.

In a showdown involving the top two teams in the Western Conference, the Sharks remained the only team in the NHL without a home loss. Detroit had won five of its six road games prior to Thursday.

After a scoreless first period, the Red Wings took the lead 18 seconds into the second when Marian Hossa's slapshot got past Evgeni Nabokov.

The Sharks then got to Ty Conklin, who started his fourth game of the season to keep Chris Osgood rested and who suffered his first loss of the year.

Marleau tied it at 7:01 of the second, after which Jamie McGinn tipped the puck past Conklin at 9:02. Ryane Clowe scored on the power play at 10:26.

Joe Pavelski added a goal in the third period to give the Sharks their third win in a row and put them atop the West with 18 points.

Nabokov, who stopped 25 shots, gave up a second goal with 32 seconds left in the game.
