VIENNA, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Eighth-seeded Gael Monfils beat No. 2 Fernando Gonzalez, an Olympic silver medalist, in Friday's quarterfinals at the Bank Austria Tennis Trophy in Vienna.
The 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) victory sets up Monfils, of France, for a semifinal match with German Philipp Kohlschreiber, a 6-2, 6-3 winner over No. 5 seed Fernando Verdasco of Spain.
Monfils reached the quarters Thursday when third-seeded Juan Martin Del Potro could not play, citing a right big toe injury.
In other matches, Spain's Feliciano Lopez beat Austrian and fellow left-hander Jurgen Melzer 4-6, 6-3, 6-4; and German Philipp Petzschner was a 6-4, 6-2 victor against 2004 Vienna winner and former world No. 1 Carlos Moya of Spain.
Saturday's second semifinal match pits Petzschner against Lopez.
Sunday's champion will earn $187,000.
