NEW YORK, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Alex Rodriguez's first-inning grand slam Sunday keyed the New York Yankees' 8-4 win over Tampa Bay.
The third baseman launched his 17th career grand slam and 34th homer this season with one out in the bottom of the inning.
With a lead-off homer in the fifth, shortstop Derek Jeter made history with his 1,269th career hit at Yankee Stadium, equaling Lou Gehrig.
Jason Giambi's lone hit was a two-run, second-inning homer. Wilson Betemit also drove in a run.
Jeter had three hits, and like Rodriguez, Johnny Damon had two hits for the Yankees, who won the final two games of three-game series, but trail the American League East-leading Rays by 10 games.
Winner Carl Pavano (3-1) surrendered four runs -- three earned -- and five hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Closer Mariano Rivera registered his 35th save by striking out the game's final batter.
Tampa Bay's Fernando Perez hit a second-inning, three-run homer. Akinori Iwamura also drove in a run.
The losing pitcher was Edwin Jackson (11-11).
