Federer moves on to fourth round

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y., Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Four-time champion Roger Federer cruised to a straight-set victory Sunday in the U.S. Open, advancing to the fourth round.

Federer, who recently lost his No. 1 world ranking to Spaniard Rafael Nadal, moved on with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 win over Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic.

The Swiss star, seeded second in the open, has not lost a match in the event since the fourth-round in 2003.

Russian Nikolay Davydenko, the fifth seed, gained the fourth round with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 win over countryman Dmitry Tursunov. Davydenko has reached the open semifinals two straight years.

Eighth-seeded Andy Roddick of the United States defeated Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-2, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).

Russian Igor Andreev topped 13th-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain 6-2, 6-4, 6-4.

Another winner was unseeded Gilles Muller of Luxembourg, who outlasted Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, the 18th seed, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6), 7-5.
