ANAHEIM, Calif., July 2 (UPI) -- Garret Anderson's two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth provided the margin of victory in the LA Angels' 5-3 win over the Oakland Athletics Tuesday.
The Angels also got RBIs from Casey Kotchman, Vladimir Guerrero and Jeff Mathis.
Angels starter Ervin Santana went seven innings, allowing two runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts but didn't get the decision. The win went to Scot Shields (4-2) even though he temporarily gave up the go-ahead run. Francisco Rodriguez faced just three batters in the ninth for his league-leading 33rd save.
Mark Ellis homered and scored twice for Oakland, which now trails the Angels by 4 1/2 games in the AL West.
Oakland starter Rich Harden gave up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts over five innings but the loss went to A's reliever Alan Embree (1-3), who failed to hold the lead.
