Davydenko goes into Warsaw quarterfinals

WARSAW, Poland, June 11 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko rallied Wednesday and earned a spot in the quarterfinals at the $670,000 Warsaw Open tennis tournament.

Davydenko, who won the ATP Polish stoop in 2006, dropped the first set in his second-round match with Jiri Vanek before escaping with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory. His quarterfinal opponent Friday will be Evgeny Korolev, who was leading 7-5, 4-0 Wednesday when Potito Starace retired.

Third-seeded Juan Monaco also advanced, taking out Florent Serra 7-5, 6-3 and earning a shot at seventh-seeded Marcel Granollers in the next round. Granollers was a solid 6-2, 6-4 winner over Marcos Daniel in his second-round match.

The other two quarterfinal matches will be set after Thursday. The highlight second-round match there has second-seeded and defending champion Tommy Robredo playing Wayne Odesnik.
