ST. LOUIS, April 26 (UPI) -- Skip Schumaker's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth Saturday lifted St. Louis over the Houston Astros 4-3.
Schumaker's only hit scored Cesar Izturis with the winning run from third base with one out.
A two-run double by Albert Pujols and Troy Glaus' sacrifice fly had given St. Louis a 3-1 lead in the third but solo homers by Houston's Lance Berkman in the fourth and seventh innings, respectively, created a 3-3 tie, leading to Schumaker's heroics.
Seven players had one hit each for the Cardinals, who have won two of their last three games.
The winner was starter Adam Wainwright (3-1). He gave up three earned runs and just five hits in a nine-inning effort with two walks and six strikeouts.
Houston's Kaz Matsui hit a solo homer in the top of the first. Matsui also had two hits for the Astros, who had won six in a row.
The losing pitcher was Dave Borkowski (0-1).
