Mark Wiebe leads on Champions Tour

PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic, April 4 (UPI) -- Mark Wiebe fired a 5-under 67 in blustery conditions Friday to grab a two-shot lead after one round of the inaugural Cap Cana Championship.

Wiebe is trying to win his second Champions Tour event after having had only two wins in his entire PGA Tour career.

Fulton Allem and Vicente Fernandez were tied for second at 69 and Tom Watson was joined in fourth place by Jay Haas and James Mason.

"There was no letup out there, but you had to stay focused," Wiebe said of the difficult conditions at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Cap Cana course. "It's nice to get off to a good start, but we have two more days to go and the wind is supposed to be about the same as it was today."

Joey Sindelar, a seven-time winner on the regular circuit, made his Champions Tour debut Friday and shot a 3-over 75 which left him tied for 38th place.
