Report: Lawmaker wants Clemens probe ended

NEW YORK, March 6 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., wants the Justice Department to drop its perjury investigation of Roger Clemens, a report said Thursday.

The investigation of the seven-time Cy Young Award-winning pitcher is to determine if he committed perjury in his testimony Feb. 13 before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on whether he ever used steroids or human growth hormones.

The New York Sun reported that Weiner said Wednesday he sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey asking the government to reconsider its investigation.

"Make no mistake, I believe that lying to Congress is a serous matter," Weiner said. "However, the Justice Department has to make decisions about how we allocate what are essentially very scarce resources."

Weiner said federal investigators have more important matters to deal with such as terrorism and rising crime.

He added that Clemens still would suffer the humiliation of a damaged reputation and the possible loss of endorsement contracts.
