
COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Former World No. 1 Gustavo Kuerten and third-seeded Russian Igor Andreev were losers Tuesday at the Brazil Open.
Kuerten, playing in his homeland, was beaten by Argentina's Carlos Berlocq 7-5, 6-1. Kuerten, a three time French Open champ, announced he will retire after the 2008 French Open and was playing for the last time at this tournament, which he won in 2002 and 2004.
Second-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain defeated Chilean Nicolas Massu 6-3, 6-2, while Argentine qualifier Eduardo Schwank knocked out Andreev 6-3, 6-2. Massu won this event in 2006.
Other upsets came when Czech Ivo Minar beat fourth-seeded Italian Potito Starace 6-4, 4-6, 6-2; Sergio Roitman beat sixth-seeded fellow Argentine Agustin Calleri 6-3, 6-2; and unseeded Argentine Sebastian Decoud beat seventh-seeded countrymant Jose Acasuso 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-3).
Fifth-seeded Italian Filippo Volandri defeated Spanish qualifier Daniel Munoz-De La Nava, 6-2, 6-4.
