NHL: Vancouver 3, N.Y. Islanders 2 (SO)

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Alexander Edler beat Rick DiPietro in the sixth round of the shootout Tuesday, securing a 3-2 win for the Vancouver Canucks over the New York Islanders.

After Edler scored, Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo stopped Trent Hunter to seal the victory. Earlier in the shootout, Trevor Linden beat DiPietro and Miroslav Satan scored on Luongo.

Markus Naslund put Vancouver up 1-0 in the first period when the Canucks outshot the Islanders 19-7. Bill Geurin tied it up in the second period on a shot that required a lengthy video review before being upheld.

New York went up 2-1 in the third period when Blake Corneau buried the puck after Luongo kicked it his way. Daniel Sedin then sent the game into overtime with a wrist shot that found its way through DiPietro's pads.
