Baseball steroids hearing postponed

WASHINGTON, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- One of the baseball steroids hearings scheduled next week by a U.S. congressional committee has been postponed until February.

The hearing is to include testimony by pitching star Roger Clemens and a former trainer, Brian McNamee, who said he injected Clemens with steroids, an allegation the player has repeatedly denied. Other big-leaguers asked to testify were Andy Pettitte and Chuck Knoblauch.

The hearing was rescheduled to Feb. 13, said a statement released by Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., and Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va. Waxman is chairman and Davis ranking minority member of the House Oversight Committee.

The committee decided to delay the hearing until after the sentencing of Kirk Radomskii, a former New York Mets clubhouse attendant who pleaded guilty in April to federal charges of distributing anabolic steroids. Radomski, also scheduled to be at the hearing, is to be sentenced Feb. 8.

A second hearing, to include testimony by Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, will go on as scheduled Tuesday, the statement said. Also at that hearing will be former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell, who released a report last month on his investigation of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball, and players' union leader Donald Fehr.
