"I came out of the blocks really fast today and he missed some shots at the start," Federer said. "It's a little bit difficult with so many family and friends here, but I am beginning to get comfortable."

The reigning U.S. Open, Wimbledon and Australian Open champion, who is the Swiss Indoor defending champion, improved to 60-7 this season in less than an hour.

Also Thursday, second-seeded Fernando Gonzalez of Chile beat Croatian qualifier Roko Karanusic, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5); and fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic topped native Stanislas Wawrinka, 7-5, 6-4.

Other winners were eighth-seeded Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, German Nicolas Kiefer, and Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus.

Gonzalez lost to Federer in last year's final.
