Hewitt wins twice at Mumbai tournament

MUMBAI, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Lleyton Hewitt won twice Thursday, earning a spot in the rain-hampered $416,000 Kingfisher Airlines Tennis Open in Mumbai.

Hewitt opened his day by finishing off a rain-delayed first-round match with Ti Chen, finally recording a 6-3, 6-3 decision. He then moved to a second-round match with Boris Pashanski, who also played twice. Hewitt won 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.

No. 1-seeded Richard Gasquet dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 rout of Fabio Fognini to secure his spot in Friday's quarterfinals. He is scheduled to meet sixth-seeded Stefan Koubek, whose second-round win came at the expense of Bjorn Phau, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Fourth-seeded Jarkko Nieminen defeated Toshihide Matsui, 6-0, 6-4, and No. 5-seeded Fabrice Santoro came back to beat Nicolas Devilder, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Nieminen and Santoro are to face off in the quarterfinals.

Olivier Rochus, seeded eighth, stopped Ivan Navarro, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4; Nicolas Kiefer beat Yen-Hsun Lu, 6-3, 6-3; and Rainer Schuettler got by Viktor Troicki, 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-1).

In addition to the Gasquet-Koubek and Nieminen-Santoro matches Friday, the quarterfinals have Hewitt going against Schuettler and Rochus playing Kiefer.

The Kingfisher champion will earn $65,850.
