MLB: LA Angels 2, Tampa Bay 1

ANAHEIM, Calif., Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Jeff Mathis knocked in the eventual winning run Wednesday with a fourth-inning single as the LA Angels of Anaheim edged Tampa Bay 2-1.

The single, Mathis’ only hit, extended an early 1-0 lead. Juan Rivera hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second for the other LA run.

Three other Angels managed one hit as the Angels swept the three-game series. The Angels reached 90 wins for the season and reduced their magic number for clinching the AL West to three games.

Winner Ervin Santana (7-13) gave up an earned run and six hits in 6 1/3 innings with two walks and 10 strikeouts. Francisco Rodriguez recorded his 37th save.

Tampa Bay’s lone run came on a solo homer by Jonny Gomes in the fifth.

Six Devil Rays had one hit as the Devil Rays lost for the seventh time in their last 10 games.

The losing pitcher was J.P. Howell (1-5).
