MLB: Texas 12, Oakland 9

ARLINGTON, Texas, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Sammy Sosa finished off an eight-run second inning with a three-run homer Sunday and the Texas Rangers out-lasted Oakland, 12-9.

After spending almost all of the season in the American League West cellar, Texas moved into a third-place tie with Oakland. The Rangers have won five straight and 12 of their last 14.

The game was interrupted in the top of the second by an intense rainstorm, causing Texas starter Kevin Millwood to be taken out of the contest.

Oakland starter Lenny DiNardo (8-9) stayed in the game, however, but did not make it out of the inning.

Sosa singled and scored the first run of the second on a single by Jason Botts. After Texas had scored five times, Colby Lewis relieved DiNardo and Sosa greeted him with a three-run blast to left-center.

Bill White (1-0) the fourth of seven Texas pitchers, got the win with two innings of one-hit relief.
