PHOENIX, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Pinch-hitter Carlos Quentin drove in the decisive run in a five-run fourth inning Saturday night, as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat St. Louis, 9-8.
The victory allowed Arizona to maintain a two-game edge over second-place San Diego in the NL West. The Padres beat Colorado, 3-1, Saturday.
The loss dropped the Cardinals two games behind Milwaukee and Chicago in the NL East. The Brewers and the Cubs both won Saturday.
Conor Jackson and Stephen Drew each had a three-run homer for the Diamondbacks, who have won four straight. Eric Byrnes had two hits and scored three times.
Arizona starter Micah Owings lasted just 2 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs on four hits, with two walks and a strikeout. Dana Eveland (1-0) got the win in relief, and Jose Valverde picked up his major league-leading 44th save in 51 chances.
Aaron Miles had a three-run homer for the Cardinals, who have lost four of their last six games. Albert Pujols had three hits, with two RBI and one run.
Todd Wellemeyer (3-3) took the loss in relief for St. Louis.
