Federer, Henin top seeds at U.S. Open

NEW YORK, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Roger Federer and Justine Henin Wednesday were installed the top men’s and women’s seeds at next week’s U.S. Open Tennis Tournament at New York.

Both players are the top-ranked players in their respective divisions. They will open the season’s final grand slam against qualifiers, with foes for both players yet to be decided.

Federer, 26, has won five titles this year, including the 50th of his career at the ATP Masters Series event in Cincinnati.

The way the draw fell Wednesday, Federer -- who will be after an Open Era-record fourth straight title at the U.S. Open -- could face 2003 U.S. Open champ Andy Roddick in the quarterfinals, and could get 10th-seeded Tommy Haas of Germany or 14th-seeded Argentine Guillermo Canas in the semis.

Henin could meet reigning U.S. Open champ Maria Sharapova in the final, which would mark a rematch of last year's U.S. Open championship match. Henin won the U.S. Open in 2003.
