Tom Glavine gets 300th victory

CHICAGO, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Tom Glavine earned his 300th career victory Sunday in the New York Mets' 8-3 win over the Chicago Cubs.

Glavine (10-6) was charged with two runs on six hits with one walk over 6 1/3 innings to become the 23rd pitcher in major league history to reach the 300-win mark.

Glavine reached No. 300 five nights after the Mets bullpen messed up his bid for a victory against Milwaukee. The Brewers rallied against the New York bullpen Tuesday after Glavine had left the game with his team holding the lead.

Greg Maddux, Glavine's former teammate with the Atlanta Braves, was the last to achieve the feat when he gained his 300th victory Aug. 7, 2004.

Roger Clemens, who was the last 300-game winner before Maddux, also failed on his second attempt before reaching the mark June 13, 2003.

Glavine's record now stands at 300 wins and 197 loses in 658 career games, all of which have been starts.
