Federer, the top seed and reigning four-time champion, beat a tired Richard Gasquet, the 12th seed, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.

Nadal, the No. 2 seed, was leading his match 3-6, 6-1, 4-1 when his opponent, Serbia's Novak Djokovic, retired with a toe injury.

"I got to look on a positive side," Djokovic said. "I had the best two weeks in Wimbledon ever."
