Henin, Sharapova look to protect top seeds

PARIS, June 6 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Justine Henin and No. 2 Maria Sharapova each face rising Serbian tennis stars in the semifinals of the French Open in Paris.

Henin is seeking her third consecutive French Open title this year and fourth in five years. She is looking to become the first winner of three consecutive French Opens since Monica Seles in 1990-92.

She must first get by No. 4 Jelena Jankovic in Thursday's semifinals. Henin is 5-0 in her career against Jankovic, including a win in the semifinals of last year's U.S. Open.

Sharapova, rated No. 2, has fought through a shoulder injury to reach the semifinals. She will go against Ana Ivanovic on Thursday. Ivanovic defeated Sharapova 6-1, 1-0 earlier this year when Sharapova retired because of injury. Sharapova won the only other time the two have played each other.

Sharapova is looking for her third consecutive Grand Slam finals appearance. She lost the Australian Open final to Serena Williams and beat Henin in last year's U.S. Open final.
