HAMBURG, Germany, May 20 (UPI) -- Roger Federer beat Rafael Nadal, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, Sunday to win the Hamburg Masters Tennis Tournament in Germany.
The defeat ended Nadal's 81-match winning streak on clay courts. He had not lost on clay since April 2005, a run that included 13 straight titles.
After winning the Italian Masters last week, Nadal was trying to become the first player to win all three Masters clay-court titles in a single season since the series began in 1990.
He suffered just the 13th defeat of his career on clay, with his overall clay-court record falling to 121-13.
"If I had to lose to anyone, Roger is the man," Nadal said. "I made more mistakes than usual."
Federer won his fourth career Hamburg crown, while improving to 4-7 overall against his clay-court nemesis.
He had lost to Nadal in their last five clay-court meetings.
