Federer, Nadal advance in Hamburg

HAMBURG, Germany, May 16 (UPI) -- Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal both reached the third round of the Masters Series Hamburg tournament Wednesday, which saw six matches affected by rain.

Federer, a three-time winner of this event and the world's No. 1 ranked player, battled past qualifier Juan Monaco on the clay surface, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. The match took place under the canvas roof on center court.

Nadal then won his record 78th consecutive clay-court match with a 7-5, 6-1 decision over Oscar Hernandez.

Rain brought about suspension or postponement of six second-round matches, but both James Blake and Lleyton Hewitt advanced.

Blake, the eighth seed, defeated Arnaud Clement, 6-2, 6-3, and Hewitt downed Juan Ignacio Chela, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). No. 10 seed Tomas Berdych was upset by Carlos Moya, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6).
