Harrington leads at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 3 (UPI) -- Ireland's Padraig Harrington fired a 6-under-par 66 Thursday for a one-shot lead after one round of the Wachovia Championship at Charlotte, N.C.

His round included three consecutive birdies at one stage, and ended with a birdie at the last hole of the day.

"I holed a lot of putts," said the 2005 winner. "A couple putts for par especially, on my second and third hole, which obviously kept the round going. Really that's what I did. I didn't really hit the ball that well or really have that much control, so it was definitely a round of good putting."

Vijay Singh missed a 10-foot birdie putt at the 18th, which could have tied him for the lead.

The 2005 winner is tied for second place at 5-under 67 with Jason Bohn.

Trevor Immelman, Dave Maggert, Carl Pettersson, and Heath Slocum were all tied for fourth at 4-under 68.
