Nadal beats Federer in straight sets

MONTE CARLO, Morocco, April 22 (UPI) -- Rafael Nadal continued domination of clay-court tennis Sunday with a victory over world No. 1 Roger Federer in the finals of the Master Series event in Monaco.

Nadal, ranked No. 2 in the world, needed just 96 minutes in taking a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Federer and winning the Masters Series-Monte Carlo for the third consecutive year. He also pushed his consecutive match victory total on clay to 67.

He will have plenty of chances to extend that mark as the next 10 ATP tournaments -- concluding with the French Open, May 28, June 10 -- are set for clay courts.

Nadal was in control throughout Sunday's final, saving each of the three break points he faced in the match.

Nadal is 7-3 in head-to-head matches with Federer, including wins in the last four times the pair met on clay courts. Those matches include finals in last year's Monaco tournament and the 2006 French Open.

He took home about $462,000 for the victory. Federer's runner-up check was for about $231,000.
