Knee sprain will cost Jamison six weeks

WASHINGTON, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- A freak right-knee injury will cause Washington Wizards forward Antawn Jamison to miss up to six weeks of what's left of the NBA regular season.

He suffered the injury in the first quarter of Tuesday night's game against Detroit when he banged knees with teammate DeShawn Stevenson after a lay-up.

An MRI Thursday confirmed a ligament sprain, but surgery will not be required.

"I'm obviously disappointed that this happened," Jamison said on the team's Web site.

"Antawn is having another exceptional year," said Coach Eddie Jordan. "We certainly feel for (him)."

The nine-year veteran out of North Carolina has averaged 19.3 points and 7.9 rebounds in 44 games this season.

He likely will be replaced by fellow forward Darius Songalia, who was signed as a free agent in the off-season, but has not played because of back surgery.

Reports say Songalia won't be ready until shortly before the all-star break in two weeks.
