PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Michael Ryder, Alexei Kovalev and Christopher Higgins all scored once Wednesday night to help Montreal beat the Philadelphia Flyers, 3-1.
Saku Koivu, Andrei Markov, Tomas Plekanec, and Sergei Samsonov each had one assist; Higgins scored un-assisted into an empty net at 19:41 of the third period after Philadelphia pulled its goaltender; and David Aebischer made 27 saves on 28 shots for the unbeaten Canadiens (2
1), who have five points in their three games.
R.J. Umberger scored the only goal at 1:51 of the third period on assists by Jeff Carter and Mike Knuble; while goaltender Antero Niitymaki allowed two goals on 22 shots for the Flyers (1-2-1), who have three points in their four games and have dropped three of their last four.
On the power play, the two teams combined to go scoreless on 12 chances.
