Ljubicic, Nalbandian win Vienna openers

VIENNA, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Top-seeded defending champion Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia and Masters Cup titlist David Nalbandian were winners Tuesday at the BA-CA Tennis Trophy in Vienna.

Ljubicic won his sixth straight match in Austria by beating Argentine Agustin Calleri, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. Second-seeded Nalbandian defeated fellow Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-2.

Ljubicic defeated Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero in last year's Vienna final.

Next up for Ljubicic will be German Florian Mayer, while Nalbandian will take on Austrian Oliver Marach.

Two other seeds advanced. No. 4 Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus held off Spaniard Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, and No. 6 German Tommy Haas beat Austrian Martin Fischer, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.

Haas won this tennis tournament in 2001 and was runner-up in 2000.
