Davydenko cruises in Kremlin Cup

MOSCOW, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko didn't lose a game Tuesday posting a first-round victory in the $1 million Kremlin Cup tennis tournament in Moscow.

Davydenko, looking to regain the Kremlin Cup title he won in 2004, swept past the Czech Republic's Jiri Vanek 6-0, 6-0 in advancing to the second round in 38 minutes.

First-round play saw a pair of high seeds upset with third-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny dropping a 6-2, 7-5 match to Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber and No. 4 Fernando Verdasco, from Spain, retiring due to illness with his match with Italy's Daniele Bracciali tied at a set apiece.

Also Tuesday, Russia's Marat Safin was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over France's Nicolas Mahut and sixth-seeded Frenchman Julien Bennerteau was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Argentina's Sergio Roitman.

The tournament winner in Moscow earns $142,000.
