3 former U.S. Open champs advance

NEW YORK, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Former champions Justine Henin-Hardenne, Lindsay Davenport and Svetlana Kuznetsova won second-round matches at the U.S. Open.

The second-seeded Henin-Hardenne defeated American Vania King 6-1, 6-2, as the Belgian star sought her fourth trip to a Grand Slam final this year.

The 10th-seeded Davenport won easily over Croat Jelena Kostanic 6-0, 6-0 in a mere 40 minutes at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The sixth-seeded Kuznetsova, the 2004 U.S. Open titlist, beat overmatched American Lauren Albanese 6-1, 6-1.

Kuznetsova will battle fellow Russian Anastassia Rodionova in the third round. Rodionova recorded a mild upset by taking out 29th-seeded Chinese Jie Zheng 7-5, 6-3.

In other top-10 seed action, No. 7 Swiss Patty Schnyder beat Swede Sofia Arvidsson 6-3, 7-5 and No. 9 Czech Nicole Vaidisova defeated Russian Alina Jidkova 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Fourteenth-seeded Italian Francesca Schiavone beat Indian Sania Mirza 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.
