MLB: Detroit 3, Minnesota 2 (12 inn.)

MINNEAPOLIS, July 29 (UPI) -- An RBI single by Craig Monroe in the top of the 12th inning Friday night gave Detroit a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Twins.

Magglio Ordonez hit a two-run double; and Placido Polanco had two of the six hits for the Tigers (69-33), who have won seven times in their last nine games.

The winning pitcher was reliever Fernando Rodney (5-3) and Todd Jones recorded his 28th save.

Luis Castillo and Joe Mauer drove in runs; while Justin Morneau had two of the six hits for the Twins (59-42), who lost for just the second time in their last 14 games, but dropped 9 1/2 games behind the first-place Tigers in the American League Central Division.

The loser was reliever Juan Rincon (3-1).

Minnesota wasted a 12-strikeout effort by starting pitcher Liriano.
