Jim Furyk (72) and Padraig Harrington (69) also are close at 2-over 142.

The difficult Winged Foot golf course again was brutal for the game's best players.

"I was not ready to play golf," admitted Woods, who was playing for the first time since the death of his father last month. He shot his second straight 76 and was 12-over 152, missing the cut for the first time as a professional.

Masters champion Phil Mickelson is tied for seventh at 3-over 143.
