Hewitt wins in a little pain in Paris

PARIS, June 1 (UPI) -- Lleyton Hewitt of Australia Thursday advanced to the third round of the French Open at Paris.

In Round Two, Hewitt, a two-time Grand Slam runner-up, beat Mathieu Montcourt of France, 7-5, 6-3, 6-3. Hewitt, who has been hampered by a sprained left ankle recently, needed to save a set point to win the first set.

"The ankle's still not 100 percent," he said. "But, you know, I'm getting through, doing all I need to right at the moment. Hopefully it picks up a bit. I've played with pain before. This is just another case of it."

His next opponent will be No. 22 seed Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia.

Among other winners were fourth-seeded Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia; No. 11 Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic; and Novak Djokovic of Serbia and Montenegro, who beat No. 9 Fernando Gonzalez of Chile, 6-4, 6-1, 3-6, 4-6, 6-1.
