Furyk, Love share first-round Players lead

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla., March 23 (UPI) -- Jim Furyk and Davis Love shot 7-under 65s before weather conditions deteriorated Thursday to share the first-round lead at the Players Championship.

Neither player made a bogey -- and Furyk reeled off seven birdies in a 10-hole stretch beginning at the eighth -- as both took advantage of benign conditions early in the day.

Rain fell off-and-on during the afternoon.

Robert Allenby, Bernhard Langer and Miguel Angel Jimenez were tied for third at 67 while those at 68 included Vijay Singh and Jose Maria Olazabal.

Retief Goosen was among those who shot a 3-under 69. Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, John Daly and defending champion Fred Funk were part of a large group at 70.

Tiger Woods had five birdies and five bogeys in a round of 72 that left him tied for 67th place. Woods skipped a practice round Wednesday and flew to California to be with his ailing father.
