Hingis, Sharapova win at Indian Wells

INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 16 (UPI) -- Maria Sharapova and Martina Hingis won their quarterfinal matches Wednesday at the Pacific Life Open Tennis Tournament at Indian Wells, Calif.

Sharapova trounced Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany, 6-1, 6-3. In the one-sided match, Groenefeld, the seven seed, was broken five times and converted just one break point.

Hingis, the 19th seed, also won easily, beating 10th-seeded Dinara Safina of Russia, 6-3, 6-4. The former world No. 1 Hingis, a five-time Grand Slam champion, also won this event in 1998. She knocked off second-seeded Lindsay Davenport in Tuesday's third round.

Hingis and Sharapova have met twice this season, with each player winning once. Hingis is 22-6 since re-joining the WTA in January and will appear in her fourth semifinal in seven tournaments.

In other quarterfinals on Thursday, top-seeded Justine Henin-Hardenne plays No. 17 Gisela Dulko; and No. 4 Elena Dementieva faces eighth-seeded Ana Ivanovic of Serbia.
