NEW YORK, March 7 (UPI) -- A book written by a pair of San Francisco Chronicle reporters says San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds began using steroids after the 1998 season.
Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams go into detail about the everyday steroid use of Bonds in their soon-to-be released book "Game of Shadows: Barry Bonds, BALCO, and the Steroids Scandal that Rocked Professional Sports."
Excerpts from the book are in the March 13 issue of Sports Illustrated.
The authors said they based their findings on more than a thousand pages of documents and interviews with more than 200 people.
The excerpts suggest that Bonds started using steroids because of the attention Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa received in 1997. Bonds broke McGwire's single-season homer record with 73 in 2001.
Bonds enters this season with 708 career homers, seven short of Babe Ruth (714) for second all-time and 48 short of Hank Aaron (755) for the all-time lead.
