Match Play pairings announced Monday

CARLSBAD, Calif., Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Tiger Woods will play Stephen Ames in the first round of the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship as pairings were announced Monday.

Woods, Vijay Singh, Retief Goosen and Ernie Els are the top four seeds in the event.

World No. 2 Singh plays Graeme McDowellin, world No. 3 Goosen takes on Paul Broadhurst, and Els meets former European Ryder Cup captain Bernhard Langer.

With Sergio Garcia and Thomas Bjorn withdrawing, Ames was able to get into the field as the final player. Ames was the third alternate behind McDowell and Craig Parry. However, Parry declined an invitation to the event.

Defending champion David Toms will play European Ryder Cupper Ian Poulter in the opening round. U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tom Lehman faces three-time Mercedes Championships winner Stuart Appleby in round one.
