Turner passes on re-buying Braves

ATLANTA, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Ted Turner says he is not interested in repurchasing the Atlanta Braves "at this time."

Turner had been noncommittal about his interest since Time Warner acknowledged last month it is pursuing a possible sale of the Braves and the regional cable network Turner South.

One factor that might have dissuaded Turner is price. The team that he bought for about $10 million in 1976 could fetch as much as $400 million now, analysts told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Atlanta marketing executive Bob Hope, a former Braves official under Turner, said it would have been out of character for Turner to re-buy the team.

"Ted's not one to retrace his steps," Hope said. "His mentality is that of an explorer. He's the ultimate 'been-there, done-that' type of guy."

Falcons owner Arthur Blank also was seen as a possible new owner.
