U.S. trails at Solheim Cup

CARMEL, Ind., Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Europe and the United States split the four-balls but the European team is two points ahead, 5-3, after day one of the Solheim Cup at Carmel, Ind.

In the four-ball competition, world No. 1 Annika Sorenstam and Catriona Matthew beat Pat Hurst and Wendy Ward, 2 & 1.

Elsewhere, Rosie Jones and Meg Mallon topped Maria Hjorth and Iben Tinning, 3 & 2; Cristie Kerr and Natalie Gulbis beat Sophie Gustafson and Karen Stupples, 2 & 1; and Laura Davies, the only player to compete in all nine Solheim Cups, teamed with Suzann Pettersen to beat the highly-regarded U.S. tandem of Paula Creamer and Juli Inkster, 4 & 3.

The session ended with two halves and two losses for the U.S., which has not held sole possession of the lead during the event. The Europeans caught fire on the back nine Friday to stop that from happening.
